Lean fuel log templates that work

We’re standardizing fuel tracking across a 36-vessel mixed fleet and need a log sheet that drives decisions, not just archives numbers. Ideal is a one-pager capturing RPM and shaft power, sea state and drift, trim/ballast, plus idle and delay codes. We tightened bunker variance 2.6% across 8 hulls by pre‑printing a tiny legend of idle/delay codes on the bottom of the one‑pager so watchkeepers stop inventing categories and ops can sort quickly; the only extra field we added was ‘shaft power avg (3 min)’. If you’re aiming for the 3.1% you saw, just make sure the code set fits on the page or people won’t use it.

We added a tiny “steady >=5 min” checkbox next to RPM/shaft kW plus a single HH:MM for when load stabilized; it stopped entries during course/swell changes and made the sea state/trim notes usable. @t_reed88’s legend tip fits, but if space is tight, print the codes on the back to keep the face clean. On our mixed CPP/FPP boats, the single add that paid off was a small ‘SOG−STW (kn)’ box next to your drift line; it turns set/current into a number watchkeepers can act on without arguing about sea state. That, plus your ‘RPM and shaft power’ pair, let mates trim load proactively and we shaved about 2% in eight weeks; @OP, it might help you push past that 3.1% last quarter. Caveat: if the log’s suspect, have them mark ‘GPS only’ so you don’t chase bad deltas.
